Chapter 780

Linda walked towards Rachel with a bunch of documents in her hands. “Ms. Grey, Mr.

Johnson is here. He’s waiting for you in your office.”

Rachel was slightly surprised. “Got it.”

Carrying her bag, Rachel hurried into her office, where she saw Lucas sitting on the sofa. He was quietly smoking

his cigarette.

When Lucas saw Rachel pushing the office door and entering the room, he pressed the cigarette between his

fingers against the ashtray and extinguished it. Then, he quickly got up and walked to the window. He opened the

window to ventilate the room. “Why are you

so late?”

“I went to see a friend.” Rachel walked to the desk, put down the bag in her hand, and looked up at him. “Why are

you here? Did something happen?”

Lucas stuck one hand in his pocket and sat back on the sofa. “I went to the police station today.”

Upon hearing this, Rachel’s expression changed slightly. “Is there any progress?”

Harold had suddenly collapsed and died when he was at the police station. To prevent the matter from blowing up,

it had been kept under wraps.

And now Lucas suddenly showed up in Rachel’s office. Could something have happened to-

Warren too?

Sensing her distress, Lucas quickly added, “Everything is fine right now. Based on the investigation, the staff

standing guard has the greatest suspicion.”

Rachel raised her eyebrows slightly. “So, he was the one who poisoned Harold?”

“The results of the investigation team indicated so,” Lucas replied coolly as he toyed with the lighter in his fingers.

“However, the guard refused to admit anything, even when the police had arrested him. Although we have all the

evidence, he is still denying the charges. Hence, there is no way to convict him now.”

“Have you found out the cause of Harold’s death?”

“According to the autopsy report, the forensic pathologist has determined the cause as hydrogen cyanide

poisoning.”

A body with too much hydrocyanic acid would display symptoms such as chest tightness and palpitations.

Lucas’s smoking addiction had been acting up lately. As he pondered, he subconsciously took a cigarette from his

cigarette box.

At this moment, Rachel asked again. “Where is that staff now?”

Lucas took the cigarette from the corner of his mouth and replied, “He is under

surveillance.”

He understood Rachel’s concerns and responded calmly, “Don’t worry, the people guarding him are all trusted

aides of my uncle. Not only are they preventing him from contacting the outside world, but they are also watching

him so that he does not commit suicide out of desperation.”

After all, that staff was the only clue they had. If anything happened to him, everyone in the police station would

have no way of clearing their names.

Many livelihoods were involved in this matter, and they treated it seriously. They did not

dare to be careless.

Nonetheless, noticing Lucas’s restless state, Rachel could not help but ask, “Are you hiding something from me?”

“What can I hide from you?” Lucas responded.

He held the cigarette between his fingers and gently knocked it against his palm. Then, he stood up and said,

“Alright, don’t let your imagination run wild. If there is nothing else, I’ll

leave first.”

Rachel sat on her chair and stared after Lucas’s back as he exited the room. There was a thoughtful expression on

her face.

In the blink of an eye, it was eleven o’clock in the morning.

The door of the conference room opened, and Rachel walked out first. Linda followed closely behind her and

recited Rachel’s schedule for that afternoon. “At one o’clock in the afternoon, you have to accompany Mr.

Geoffrey’s wife for horse-riding. At four o’clock in the afternoon, you have to meet with the Vice-president of

Twilight Technology. There are also a few financial magazines that want to interview you. What do you think?”

“Turn them away!” As expected, Rachel rejected.

She then paused before continuing, “How’s the planning for the Real Estate Summit?”

Linda was about to reply when Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.

When Rachel saw that it was David, she gave Linda a knowing look and walked toward her

office

As soon as she picked up the phone, David’s deep and cold voice sounded in her ear. “You’re not off work yet?”

“I might have to work overtime these few days.” Rachel raised her hand and pushed open the thick glass door of

the office room. “The day of the Real Estate Summit is nearing. As the leader of the company, I have to set an

example. I can’t let everyone work overtime while I slack off, right? After I get through these few days, the next

couple of days should be

more chill.”

David’s deep voice slowly drifted into her ears. It was exceptionally seductive. “And then?”

“And then…” Rachel deliberately dragged out her words. “I can accompany you all you want.” A faint smile

appeared on her face.

Upon hearing this, David’s lofty attitude softened. It was as if the spring breeze had dispelled all the frost in

anticipation of the immediate arrival of spring. “Remember. If you encounter any trouble, just give me a call.”

He did not say much, but those short sentences were brimming with adoration and

fondness.

Rachel’s heart skipped a beat, and the corners of her lips involuntarily curled up. “I know.”

After hanging up, she took her cup and went to the pantry.

As she approached the pantry, she could hear the few employees who were also taking a break in the pantry.

In such a busy and fast-paced environment, the only way for the employees to fight exhaustion and boredom was

through coffee and gossip in the pantry.

Rachel did not mind their discussion at all, even if she was the topic of their gossip at

times.

They were talking about office romance. When they saw Rachel walk in, they immediately became uneasy and

nervous.

“Carry on.” Rachel’s gaze swept across them and stopped on Haley for a second. She then continued to pour

herself a cup of hot water.

However, the employees no longer felt like continuing their gossip when Rachel was there. They could only leave

the pantry begrudgingly.

Haley got up and was about to leave when Rachel suddenly asked, “Are you used to your job now?”

Haley stopped what she was doing and replied “I’ve adapted”

Rachel held her mug in her hand and sized up Haley from top to bottom. Her eyes flickered as she secretly chided

her, “Are you in charge of leading the summit?”

Haley answered honestly, “Yes.”

“I’m looking forward to your performance.” Rachel’s lips curled into a meaningful smile.

Haley looked up at Rachel. When her eyes met Rachel’s sharp gaze, Haley’s eyelids trembled slightly, and she

quickly lowered her eyes to avoid Rachel’s gaze.

After finishing her work for the day, Rachel dragged her tired body into the underground parking lot.

She stretched her aching shoulders and neck and retrieved her car’s remote control from

her bag.

When she drove out from the underground garage, she saw Linda waiting for a taxi by the

roadside.

Linda had her head lowered and was looking at her phone. She was so deep in thought that

she did not hear Rachel’s car horns.

It was not until Rachel pulled her car to the side of the road and lowered the window to call

her that Linda snapped back to her senses. “Get in, I’ll send you back.”

Linda hesitated for a split second before nodding.

In the car, Rachel could tell that Linda was troubled, but she did not ask further.

Linda pursed her lips and finally handed her phone to Rachel. “Rae-Rae, take a look at

this.”

After confirming the road ahead, Rachel turned her head and quickly glanced at Linda’s phone. Her eyes flickered

slightly. “When did you take that?”
