Chapter 681

Whitney's footsteps were hesitant as she dared not enter the hall. The couple looked like a match made in heaven;

it was so much to the point that no one could afford to interrupt them. Somehow, she felt something off. It was as if

a hundred spears were piercing her chest, and the pain was aching. Clutching the check in her palm, she felt her

breath hitching.

Emily wept for a long time in Douglas' arms before raising her head and wiping the tears away in embarrassment.

Looking at his tear-stained clothes, her face turned slightly scarlet. She then apologized in a hoarse voice, "Sorry for

losing my cool."

Seeing her uneasy appearance, he smiled and comforted her softly, "I am your husband. It only makes sense that I

give you my shoulder to lean on when you are sad."

She was moved by his words. Sniffing her nose, she sobbed, "Thanks, Doug."

After wiping all her tears, she smiled and said, "Lucy is waiting for me. I have to go."

"OK." Douglas nodded. "I'll come home and see her tonight."

Without uttering another word, Emily turned and left.

Whitney hid in a corner as she watched Emily exit the hall. Although she didn't know why Emily suddenly bawled,

she sensed the familiarity of Douglas' gentle appearance. Back when they were in school, he used to comfort her

just like how he did earlier to Emily. She continued hiding in the corner until Emily was entirely out of sight, at which

point she slowly emerged from it.

He was the only person standing in the empty room. Whitney felt a little timid as she glanced at him and finally

mustered up her courage to walk up to him. As he observed the approaching woman, there was not the slightest

trace of surprise on his face. He stood there calmly with his hands in his pockets.

"Douglas," Whitney called out to him.

Douglas' eyes fell on her, yet the expression on his face didn't change. He merely blurted, "What's up?"

Comparing how intimate he was with Emily earlier and how cold he was to her right now, Whitney couldn't help but

feel a sense of disappointment. She tightly gripped the check and belatedly remembered that she was here to pay

him for what she owed. Loosening her grip, she flattened the check on her palm and handed it to him.

Douglas lowered his head and took a glimpse. The check that amounted to one billion was a generous one. He

heard from his assistant that Whitney cashed out one billion from the shares of the Campbell Corporation.

"This check is for you," Whitney said.

The corner of his mouth turned up in a sneer. After giving the check a cursory glance, he looked away and snorted

in an emotionless manner, "What? Are you trying to make up to me with one billion? Or do you sympathize with

me?"

His tall figure gradually approached her with heavy steps as he looked down at her.

Whitney felt a wave of pressure but still bit the bullet and handed over the check. "Please take it. This is all I can

cash out from the Campbell Corporation. I hope we can settle our grievances once and for all."

As if hearing a joke, Douglas smirked and snickered, "Settle once and for all? Who are you to decide that, Whitney

Campbell? Why didn't you do this when you framed me and ruined my family? Are you trying to shirk your

responsibilities now that you can no longer fight with me? No way!"

As soon as she looked up, she could see the resentment filling his eyes. She felt a throbbing pain in her heart, but

she stuffed the check in his palm. "Our family has fallen. Michael is imprisoned and my father is paralyzed. Soon,

Campbell Corporation will declare its bankruptcy."
