Chapter 193 It’s My Fault, Not Yours

Nancy frowned. “What’s your reason, then?”

Lewis withdrew his arm and stood, putting distance between himself and Nancy. “It doesn’t matter. I

acted according to your will, so what else do

you want?”

Nancy chewed on it and realized he was right; it was just the way he spoke that irritated her.

She was upset and couldn’t help but tear up. “Do you hate me that much, even now? I’ve been looking

out for you, but it never crossed my mind you would loathe me so much. I feel like I’ve failed as a

mother.”

Lewis looked at her with cold, unperturbed eyes. He said, “Indeed, I hate you. But I believe I’ve been

benevolent to you.”

Nancy’s pupils contracted as she looked up at him, taken aback. “What did you say?”

His monotonous voice rang out, “I told you, I’m not the young boy I used to be. Only you know best

whether all the ‘sacrifices’ you made were for my sake or yours. The only right thing you ever did was

join the Alvarez family. Everything that followed has nothing to do with you. Don’t think so highly of

yourself; your explanation will not deceive anyone forever.”

Nancy was rendered speechless. Her eyes flickered, filled with shock and disbelief as she looked at

Lewis.

Lewis put his hands in his pockets and solemnly said, “As much as I owe you a great debt of gratitude,

I will eventually pay it off. I hope you can remain in your place and not hasten the day I fulfill my debt.”

Those hurtful words stabbed Nancy like razor-sharp knives.

She stood up slowly and approached Lewis, her eyes welling up with tears as she looked at him.

Suddenly, she raised her hand and slapped Lewis.

Lewis caught her hand mid-air, squeezed her wrist, and lowered his gaze. “Please go back if that is all.”

Nancy shook with anger. “Y-You-”

That was all she could manage. She was always beside herself with rage and resignation whenever

Lewis was beyond her control. She also felt immense fear.

Nancy tugged her hand and broke free from his grasp. She cast him another meaningful glance.

Lastly, she grabbed her bag and said through gritted teeth, “Great, just great! You’re all up now,

capable of leaving the nest. You’re not seeing me as your mother anymore. You’d better keep your

promise and get the divorce over with, or else! I don’t give a shit about your debt of gratitude.”

After saying those words, Nancy stormed out in her heels.

Everyone surrounding them stifled their breaths and stared at their toes, pretending they heard nothing.

Lewis didn’t react differently just because of Nancy’s visit; he behaved as if Nancy had never

come.

He went upstairs nonchalantly.

When he returned to the bedroom, Josephine was awake.

Her eyes were wide open as they darted everywhere, scanning her environment. She looked confused.

Josephine couldn’t remember what happened.

The last thing she remembered was Lewis telling her he was taking her out to celebrate her birthday.

But why was she lying in bed?

She was pondering when she heard footsteps. Subsequently, she looked toward the door.

When she saw Lewis, she intuitively tried to get out of bed. But when she propped herself up on her

hand, she felt piercing pain on her wrist.

Her face contorted in agony.

Josephine lay back down, exhausted. It took a while for her to recover. She blankly lifted her hand and

looked dazed when she saw the bandage around her wrist.

“Josephine, I underestimated you.”

Hearing that, Josephine turned and saw Lewis’ frosty face.

He sat on the bed and looked at her, his tone calm as he said, “Since you can’t wait any longer, let’s

get the divorce certificate now. We’ll go immediately.”

Josephine shuddered and looked at him incredulously, thinking, “Why is he talking about divorce out of

nowhere?”

Lewis saw her expression, and his lips curled into a cold smile. “Have you been infected with the skills

of acting?” His slender finger fell on Josephine’s chin and tilted it upward. He continued in a low voice,

“One second, you’re dying to get a divorce, and now you’re feigning innocence. Are you trying to trick

everyone else into believing I’m at fault so you can get more money from me?”

Josephine stared right at him. She didn’t understand what he just said at all.

All she could think of was the divorce certificate he mentioned.

It was nothing less than a thunderstruck to Josephine. She felt dizzy and perplexed.

“I don’t have time to keep this act up. Get up. Let’s get the divorce over with!” Lewis commanded as he

stood.

Josephine realized he wasn’t joking-he was serious.

He wanted to divorce her…

She felt the urge to cry. She forced herself to sit upright despite being physically weak. Blood seeped

through the bandage on her wrist as she exerted force with her fingers.

Josephine bit her lip and signed, “What did I do wrong?”

Lewis burst out laughing. His laughter was tinged with scorn. “You didn’t do anything wrong; I did. Now

let’s go.”

His tone was self-deprecating and distant.

Josephine frantically signed, “I’m sorry. I’m at fault. I’ll make amends.”

The smile on Lewis’ lips faded, and his eyes spat fire. He grabbed her wrist, and coincidentally, it was

her injured one. “Josephine, don’t challenge my patience. Come!”

Josephine felt excruciating pain shoot up from her wrist, and tears rolled down her cheeks.

Before she could react, Lewis had started dragging her down the bed. She landed on her knees so

hard she felt her legs would break.

Josephine looked up and saw his stony face. Her heart sank.

Lewis thought his palm felt warm. He abruptly released Josephine-the bandage was now entirely red.

Josephine pressed her lips into a thin line. She withstood the pain and gestured, “You don’t want me

anymore?”

Lewis lowered his gaze and stared at her, the light in his eyes flickering. Then, he coldly smiled again.

“Are you having fun?”

Josephine lowered her gaze in silence. After quite some time, she slowly rose to her feet, gesturing,

“Okay.”

He didn’t want her anymore. Although she knew this day would come sooner or later, she never

expected it so soon.

Indeed, it wasn’t fun to be with a mute like her.

Lewis left. Staring at her toes, Josephine remained in the house for a long while.

She finally went out when a bodyguard came and knocked on the door.

She walked to the lawn, her legs filled with lead.

Lewis was already waiting in the car.

She opened the door and went in. She hadn’t even fastened her seat belts when he drove off. He was

so impatient.

Josephine felt bitter. Was he really that desperate to end their marriage?

Lewis said nothing on the way. The divorce agreement lay on the dashboard, and Josephine stared

fixedly at it.

She couldn’t remember when she signed the agreement.

Half an hour later, they arrived at the City Hall.
